Christianity and Mental Health: Anxiety

There are several types of anxiety and all people have it from time to time.  The Bible says not to be anxious but to rely on the Lord.  Most people are a little anxious about new things in their lives or if they have to do something they are not comfortable with such as giving a speech.  However, some people have a great deal of anxiety to the point in interferes with their ability to function. 

Anxiety comes from stress and the person’s coping methods are not working to handle the stress.  One example of a nonfunctioning coping method is avoidance.  Say a person needs to make a difficult phone call so they avoid calling until the very last minute.  At that point the anxiety of making the phone call can become immobilizing.  The person may feel physical symptoms such as shaking and difficult breathing.  Some people have reported feeling like they were having a heart attack. Anxiety affects everyone differently and these are only a few of the symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks.  If you ever get to this point please reach out to someone for help!

Serious anxiety comes in many forms.  From mild panic attacks to being paralyzed with fear and unable to leave your home.  I had a lot of anxiety in graduate school and it often caused episodes of vertigo which would last hours to sometimes days.  I did not realize why I was getting vertigo so often was because of anxiety.  It is almost funny I have not had any real episodes of vertigo since I finished grad school and broke up with a guy I should not have gotten involved with in the first place.  Yes, I still have times when I feel a little dizzy but I realize it could be anxiety and do my breathing exercises and pray for peace in my mind. 

Breathing exercises: breath through your nose and hold it for ten seconds then breath out through your mouth.  Try and think of things which make you relax.  I often think of Psalms 23:2 where the shepherd (God) is leading me besides the still-calming waters. Do this about ten times thinking about something calming while doing it.  If it is mild anxiety this should really help.  If you have severe anxiety please see a medical professional. 

Avoiding stress is impossible but coping with it is something you can do to keep your anxiety to a manageable level.  Some things you can do is asses your level of stress and anxiety.  Figure out what is causing your anxiety.  Then think about what your life would look like without this stress or anxiety in your life and write down what you can do to achieve this.  Take small steps to get to your solution.  For instance, in the phone call situation write down the number you need to call along with what you need to say. 

Keep in mind I am not a therapist, but I do have a master’s degree in counseling.  So please see a therapist or a medical professional if your anxiety is not helped by any of my suggestions.  Just remember, God does not want you to be anxious He wants you to know He is there with you in every circumstance in life.  I Peter 5:7 says “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you”.  And Romans 8:38 and 39 Nothing can separate us from the love of God.  And finally, Luke 18:1 we are to pray always and not give up!

Dells Christian Campgrounds was started by a group of men around the same time my twin and I were born.  I grew up there during every summer.  It was my home away from home.  I have many memories to relive.

The merry-go-round is one of my earliest memories.  It is still standing today.   We would get that thing spinning as fast as we could and jump on.  Sometimes we would grab on to the heavy chains connecting the seats to the top frame.  As we spin our feet would leave the seat and we would be horizontal.  As a mom and a grand mom I am hoping my kids nor grandkids never do anything so stupid.

The cave is another memory.  It is located on the Wisconsin river just a short distance from the camp’s little sandbar.  As a kid you could gain access to it by climbing up a tree roots then crawling along a narrow ledge to the cave.  I do not think it is possible to get to the cave by land anymore.  You can get there by boat but the cave is high up in the rocky cliffs and you may need a ladder.  Why go through all the trouble to get to the cave?  Because it is a nice little cave and you can see carvings in the cave from people who visited the cave in the early 1900’s.

The Big and Little sandbars is what we called the two sandbars when I was a kid.  The big sandbar is no longer accessible to the people at the camp because it belongs to a condo company and they have fenced off the land.  It was called the big sandbar because it was usually larger than the sandbar on the camp’s property.  It was a great place to swim because the sandbar came out into the river in a V shape and it provided a channel along the cliffs that was deep enough for swimming yet out of the current of the river so it was safer to swim.  We used to have a rope swing from the cliffs.  So many good memories.  In August there would be a large area of blackberries just waiting to be picked.  Yum!  The little sandbar is on camp property and you used to be able to drive down to it and put your boat in the river.  Years of rain washing out the road has made that impossible and now the road is overgrown.  There is a path from the camp to the river and when you get to the river there is a staircase leading down to the sandbar. 

My valley was a place I called my own as a child but I am sure others visited when I was not around.  It was probably an old logging road but I called it my valley.  It was down by the little sandbar off the main road down to the water. There was a fallen log laying across the valley just high enough for me to sit on and reflect.  It was a quiet place where I could go to reflect on God’s creation.

The Dining Hall and cabins which stand on the campground have stood almost since the beginning of the camp.  While there are a few new ones most are in their original location.  Over the years they have gone through renovations to update them.  While still rustic in nature the cabins sport really nice bathrooms and complete kitchens in most of them.

The dining hall has likewise gone through some renovations.  However, many of the components are still in the same place.  The dining area still have the long tables which seat up to eight people.  There is chairs in place of the long benches we used to sit at as a kid.  The large passthrough window is still there along with the triple sinks in the corner.  The huge cook table is still there.  I remember the older cook as a child who would make wonderful meals and made from scratch sweet rolls on that table.  The dining hall still is used by large groups who rent the camp.

The Water Hole still stands and it is where the well is which supplies the entire camp.  It has the sweetest water.  It is just steps away from the bathrooms.  When my kids were in grade school I bought a large tent and a bunch of camping equipment and we camped near the bathrooms and watering hole.  I am glad my kids got to experience some of the things I got to experience as a kid.

When I was a kid the campgrounds would have old fashion revival meetings every year.  It started in a huge tent which was set up in a field.  They had evangelists from around the country come.  The meetings were held for up to three weeks a summer.  They built a large screened in building and called it the tabernacle.  We had old theater seats to sit on and a stage where the evangelists would pound the pulpit and beg people to come to Jesus.

Now the camp is going strong.  One of my brothers and his wife oversee the day to day upkeep of the camp.  While the camp no longer holds revival meetings it is rented out by groups and families all summer long.  It still maintains the Christian atmosphere as it’s humble beginnings.  You can find out more by visiting the camps website at:

The Northwoods Series: The Hodag

The Hodag

What the heck is a Hodag?  The Hodag is a mythical creature found in the Northwoods.  According to Wikipedia “It had “the head of a frog, the grinning face of a giant elephant, thick short legs set off by huge claws, the back of a dinosaur, and a long tail with spears at the end”.  The first was mention in Paul Bunyan stories.  Gene Shepard, of Rhinelander, found the Hodag and set out to capture it with a group of people.  Wikipedia reports they used dynamite to kill the beast. 

As it turns out the Hodag is a is a fake but that did not stop Gene Shepard from making a Hodag and displaying it at various places including the Onieda County fair.  He charged people to see the Hodag at the fair.  One story I heard he had his daughters hiding behind the curtains pulling wires and growling. 

But the Hodag lives on in the hearts of all those who have lived here or visited.  It is the school mascot.  The Hodag statue can be found all around town.  Many of the statues around town were painted by an artist friend of mine, Linda.  It is also the name of the annual country festival here in Rhinelander.  The Hodag Country Fest happens in July and it attracts big bands and people from all over the world.   I have never been to Country Fest but maybe someday.

I have lived a lot of places in this country as an adult, but I have lived in Rhinelander the longest.  I almost feel like a native so does that make me a Hodag?  The photo above is the Hodag located at the Pioneer Park with a logging museum.

CT’s Deli: A Restaurant Review

CT’s Deli stands for Chef Tom’s Deli.  I have been to CT’s Deli on a couple of occasions and I have enjoyed the food they serve.  The last time I went I went with my out of town sister.  We ordered from the chalkboard menu on the wall near the counter.

My sister went to get our food.  I ordered the Asian salad.  While it was a well made salad full of lots of ingredients there was something in the salad that was very bitter.  I could not figure out what it was so I ate the salad and enjoyed the rest of it.  I found out it was a certain kind of pepper. The other time I went I ordered a chicken wrap and really liked it.  On another occasion I attended an event for work where CT’s Deli catered.  We had the pulled pork.  It was wonderful.  Paired with coleslaw it brought back memories of a restaurant I went to when I lived in Mississippi. 

Both times I have visited the restaurant was at lunch times.  It was busy but the wait time for your food was very reasonable.  It was a little loud but not too loud.  The tables are spread apart enough to enjoy a conversation.

There is outdoor seating as well.

The staff is friendly and helpful.  While you “bus” your own tables at CT’s Deli the staff often will come around and collect your empty plates.   Plasticware and napkins are on the tables along with condiments. 

Situated on Brown Street in Rhinelander the restaurant has the look of an old fashion bar from the inside and out.

May, 2020 Update:

Right now with the COVID-19 virus all restaurants are take out only. I have ordered from CT’s Deli twice in the last month. A few weeks ago I ordered the beef tips with risotto and green beans. It was heavenly! It was their special for the night. Last night I stopped to take pictures and ended up ordering the special again. It was stuffed peppers. It was also wonderful! The specials are between $10 and $12 or more for more expensive foods. I was thinking I went to Hardees and paid almost $9 for room temperature fries and a roast beef sandwich. I asked myself why am I supporting the big chain fast food places when I can support a local restaurant for a couple of dollars more.

The chefs are professionally trained.  They also do their own baking.  They have a website.  It shows their staff and menu.  It also lists events happening in the restaurant.  One thing CT’s is known for is their fundraising events where they raise funds for local charities such as the homeless shelter.

Christianity and Mental Health Part One: Depression

Christianity and Depression

As a Christian I should not be depressed right?  Well, it happens!  I struggle with depression often but it is mostly from chronic pain.  Sometimes I feel like it is an endless wheel of going to work and trying to get enough sleep.  Pain interferes with my sleep patterns.  My days off are not together and it seems so hard to get much done when I get a day off.  I am usually trying to get caught up on my sleep and then at the end of the day I am rushing around trying to get something done.  Sometimes the mountain of things to do seem too high for me to climb and I get depressed and not get much of it done.  God must be really tired of hearing about how tired I am or how much pain I have but I know He doesn’t.  I know in my head He loves me and cares about my pain but sometimes my heart does not get it!   

I used to take medication for situational depression but I do not need it anymore.  Yes, medication is important and I highly recommend discussing it with your doctor if you are depressed but I have reached the point where I can redirect my depressive thoughts.  How?  Well, do not try it yourself unless you have been to therapy and have been taught how.  I have been to therapy but more importantly I have a master’s degree in mental health.  While I never got a job as a therapist I have utilized my education on myself.  Too bad myself cannot pay me so I can pay off my student loans faster. 

So when I am hurting and tired I start to think about how miserable my life is and how alone I feel.  Sunday mornings are the worse because I want to be able to go to church but am often not able because of the pain and my work schedule.  I start thinking everyone does not like me and will not miss me if I am not at church.  Then I STOP myself!  Not today Satan!  I will not listen to your lies!  I am not saying Satan puts thoughts in my head but if I start thinking negative thoughts I have to tell myself the thoughts are not from God and therefore are not truthful.  God has proven to me over and over He loves me and wants me to think on good things.  Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.”  (NIV)  So that is what I do instead of thinking negative thoughts.  I had to train my brain.

However, there is a difference between situational depression where you can train your brain to think differently and be okay and real depression where you want to end your life.  If that is where you are at I say seek professional help immediately!  You can call the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at: 1-800-273-8255 and talk to a professional.  Or go to the emergency room at a nearby hospital.  But, most of all Tell Someone how you are feeling!!!!  Do not try to save yourself!  Depression is a real thing and being a Christian does not exempt you from getting it.  Usually it is a chemical imbalance in your brain and with the help of a medical professional and therapy you can get relief. 

So ask yourself how long have you been feeling depressed and when do you feel it the most?  If it is all the time and it has been going on awhile please seek professional help.  I am not a professional but I have the training a professional has had just not the experience nor do I have a license to practice therapy.  If you feel depressed once in awhile try thinking about the verse above and talking to your pastor or a leader in the church you feel comfortable with to share your thoughts.  If you cannot figure out if this is just situational depression then seek professional help.  Remember God loves you and He is with you through your entire life if you let Him.

God's Plan: Why am I still at Walmart?

I ask God why am I still at Walmart in my prayer journal so often He is probably tired of hearing it!  Today’s Our Daily Bread references Acts 16:7 where Paul and companions tried to enter an area called Bithynia but the Spirt of Jesus would not let them.  There are many instances in the Bible where a person wants to go somewhere but they are prevented.  Some, such as Jonah, were not open to where God wanted them to go.  Am I open to God’s leading?   I think of Paul asking God to remove the thorn in his flesh three times but God said no.   “My Grace is sufficient for you” (II Corinthians 12:7-10 NIV).  I noticed this passage starts out “in order to keep me from becoming conceited…” (vs, 7).  Maybe that is why I never became a counselor?   Maybe not.  But whatever the reason God still has me at Walmart.

I have around ten years of education including a master’s degree and two graduate certificates.  I worked hard to get that education and received honors.  I thought God wanted me to be a counselor.  However, during my internship things did not go well at all and I gained very little experience in the art of counseling.  By the end of the nine months I was exhausted and I just wanted my degree and be done with it!  Since then I have applied for several jobs in my field including all over the state but most times I did not get a response.  I did get some interviews but they were few and far between and I do not interview well.  The older I got the less I thought of applying.  Why bother anymore?   Meanwhile I got a job cleaning hotel rooms and bussing tables on the weekends until my right shoulder hurt so bad I could not do it anymore.  So, I got a job at Walmart.

That was almost five years ago.  The last three years I have mostly worked self-check.  It has been hard on my body, very hard!  I can no longer do much lifting nor can I bend down, kneel or pick things off the floor.  I have arthritis in my shoulders, back, knees, and now my ankle.  I started using a cane when I get home from work to get into my house and move around after work.  I have seen many health care providers in the last two and a half years. 

Yet I like working at self-check.  I enjoy being able to move about and help the customers scan their items.  I also enjoy helping to prevent theft.  I have trained a number of cashiers to work self-check and I enjoy hearing how they stopped a theft.  I have also made some great friends just doing my job.  I listen to people.  Some of my customers and coworkers are going through some really tough times.  They are in my prayers.  Maybe that is why God has me at Walmart. 

Yet, I look forward to the day when I am promoted to customer.  I decided I am going to retire the day before I turn 62 years old.  However, that may not be God’s plan either.  Yet, I am not sure my body can hold out much longer.  One of the things I enjoyed about college and grad school is writing.  I started my blog with the goal in mind to write for income.  I have a goal to make enough money writing so I can cut my hours or quit.  It is a goal I have to work hard to achieve while still working at Walmart.  Often the pain from the later makes the goal difficult.  So, why God am I still at Walmart?  I am open to Your leading.

Book Review: Hurt People Hurt People By Sandra Wilson, PhD

Book Review: Hurt People Hurt People

Dr. Wilson, a family therapist and professor, wrote a book originally published in 1993 about hurting people.  I first read this book for a graduate-level pastoral counseling class at Liberty University in 2015.  I was drawn to the book because it talks a lot about unseen wounds and how it affects people as adults.  As I was reading it then and now for this review I saw myself in the pages.  While I grew up in a fairly normal family full of love for each other, I was sexually abused by someone in my church as a young child.  There, I said it out loud!  I finally told someone last year when I was with my two sisters at 58 years of age.  Now the world, or at those who read this knows. 

The first part of this talks about childhood hurts.  Most of Dr.Wilson’s hurts are abuse and neglect.  She then continues to talk about how children perceives these hurts.  She talks a lot about shame and how much pretending is involved for these young children.  Some of the stories are so heartbreaking, including Sandra’s own story. 

Dr. Wilson then goes on to talk about help for healing.  Some of the topics include: healing for leaders, followers, worshippers, forgivers, and parents.   She includes many charts which are easy to read to help the reader see what is the best thought process.  This book was written for the average person and is very helpful.

Father’s Day: His Own Son

Recently, I read Genesis 22.  It is the story how Abraham went to sacrifice his son for God.  God wanted to test Abraham’s faith.  Abraham and Sarah waited many years to have a child.  In fact they were in their late 90’s when Isaac was finally born. ( People lived a lot longer back then.)  Isaac was God’s promise to Abraham several years earlier.  God promised Abraham He would make Abraham line would be a great nation.    

The story goes like this: God spoke to Abraham (I love how God speaks directly to Abraham.) Abraham go to the mountain which I will show you and sacrifice Isaac there.  So Abraham took his son and two servants and set out.  When they got close to the mountain Abraham told his two servants to wait there and he took Isaac and wood and fire up to the mountain.  On the way up Isaac asked where was the lamb to be sacrificed since they only had wood and fire with them.  He must have been used to the custom of sacrificing animals as an act of worship.  God had instructed Adam and Eve to offer sacrifices as an atonement for sin.  This was a foreshadow of the ultimate sacrifice.  Abraham replied to his son God will provide the lamb.

So, I am wondering what was going through Abraham’s mind this whole time?  Did he expect God to supply a lamb or did he really expect to sacrifice his son whom he waited so long for and loved so dearly.  Would I be willing to go as far as Abraham that day?  I would like to think so but in reality I doubt I have that much faith.  Back to the story…

Abraham and Isaac find a rock to sacrifice on and place the wood on it.  Then Abraham places his son on the wood.  I am wondering now what Isaac was thinking!  Was he being obedient and just laying there or was he pleading with his Dad not to hurt him?  Abraham raises the knife and God stops him!  Wow!  To have that much faith in God that you are willing to go that far.  Abraham looks and there in a bush was a lamb caught by the horns.  God provided a lamb!

I have heard this story all of my life but one day recently when I was reading it suddenly it hit me!  God was not willing for Abraham to kill his son but God was willing to sacrifice His own Son!  Wow!  I can just imagine God in Heaven sitting there watching this whole story pan out.  God is so sad Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son.  God stops it from happening because He loved both Abraham and Isaac so much.  How God could be willing to allow His Son to be sacrificed when He would not let Abraham do it?  He much love us so much!

John 3:16 says God loved the world, which means everyone who ever lived, so much that He gave His only Son (to be sacrificed for our sin) and anyone who believes in God’s Son, Jesus, will live forever with Him!  Do you believe?

Graduation: The Memories!

Graduation Memories

It is spring so that means graduation time is upon us. Some of us are graduating and some of us have loved ones graduating. This blog post reminds me of past graduations.  My high school graduation was in 1977, yes, I am that old!  I remember getting a big blue trunk for graduation.  I kept that trunk until a few years ago.  Unfortunately, one of my kids stood on it and it broke.  Since high school I have had three graduations.  One was from Nicolet College, one from UW-Milwaukee and the other was from Capella University.  Nicolet College has a beautiful campus just south of the town where I live.  I attended there when I realized my marriage was ending and I needed to be educated to be out on my own. 

There I started my nine year journey to be educated in order to be accepted.  I really thought that if I was educated people would respect me and love me.  How wrong I was!   God always loved me with or without an education!  Do I regret having gone to school?  No!  I have so much more wisdom about life.  Do I regret what I went to school for, counseling? No, not really.  Yes, I did not use my degree professionally but I use it often to say just the right thing to people I come in contact with every day. 

I also found I have respect for myself and am happy with the person who I am becoming.  Journaling every day has helped me look at myself in a deeper way.  It also helps me to see me as how God sees me-His child.  At 60 years of age I have decided not to continue to search for jobs in my field.  I am now looking forward to retiring from my current position, which is very hard on my body, and pursuing writing for income.  I am hoping to graduate to customer in about 14 months.

Memorial Day: A North/South Historical Controversy

During my adult life I have had the privileged to live in many places including Boalsburg, Pennsylvania and Starkville, Mississippi which is near Columbus, Mississippi.  Both Boalsburg and Columbus claim they are the birthplace of Memorial Day.   I am no historian but I was thinking of Memorial Day and wanted to write about my experiences of both of these towns. 

Boalsburg is a very small town with a lot of history.  There are shops that have been around since the 1600’s.  There is even a mansion built by a descendent of Christopher Columbus.  The chapel on the mansion grounds comes from Spain.  I toured the mansion one year while I lived in Boalsburg.  It is beautiful and very ornate.  You can also visit the mansion virtually at this website: http://www.boalmuseum.com/virtual-tour.html

The story talks about how three women went to the cemetery to put flowers on the graves of soldiers who died in the Civil War.  The date was 1864.  They decided to do it again the following year and invited the townspeople to join them.  The next year most of the town showed up to walk to the cemetery.  This tradition has continued to this day. 

I lived right in Boalsburg and have experienced their yearly tradition on Memorial Day.  I lived there from 1990 to 1993.  I was able to go one year.  Everyone met in the town square and walked together to the cemetery.  Several of the townspeople were dress in the Civil War period dress.  That year they had a speaker who looked just like Abraham Lincoln give the Gettysburg Address.  It was awesome and now I wish I had a camera.

I did not live in Columbus, Mississippi but in a nearby town called Starkville.  However,  I have made several trips to Columbus during the five years I lived in Starkville and have toured some of the historic homes.  I do not remember much of Columbus, Mississippi but I do remember they also claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day.  Their story is more renown because it was published in New York newspapers and a poem was written about it.  Wikipedia reports:

One of the hospitals was located at Annunciation Catholic Church, built in 1863 and still operating in the 21st century. The decision of a group of ladies to decorate the Union and Confederate graves with flowers together on April 25, 1866, is an early example of what became known as Memorial Day. A poet, Francis Miles Finch, read about it in the New York newspapers and commemorated the occasion with the poem “The Blue and the Grey”.[10] Bellware and Gardiner noted this observance of the holiday in The Genesis of the Memorial Day Holiday in America (2014). They recognized the events in Columbus as the earliest manifestation of an annual spring holiday to decorate the grave of Southern soldiers. Notice the date as 1866.  This is a whole two years after the three ladies of Boalsburg went and decorated the graves of the fallen.  Yet an article in the Atlantic (https://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2014/05/a-real-story-of-memorial-day/371497/) says Columbus, Mississippi is the real story of Memorial Day.  My opinion may not matter much to historians and newspapers but I believe Boalsburg is the first place where Memorial Day started.  My reasoning is Boalsburg is a very small town compared to Columbus.  Also, the Boalsburg celebration did not make the New York newspapers.  And finally, the Boalsburg tradition started two years earlier and has continued without stopping since 1864.

But what really matters is not the debate of when Memorial Day started but why it started.  To Honor those who gave their lives for this country!  I work with a Marine who served several years.  I asked him if he would like to share his thoughts on Memorial Day.  He said “Memorial Day is not a day to be celebrated but to be observed in honor of the fallen.”  Michael, U.S. Marine

The Wall

This is the wall, my grandfather’s wall. On it are the names of those killed in a war, long ago. So begins the story of a little boy and his father. They’ve come from far away to visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington and find the name of the boy’s grandfather. Other visitors pass by, searching for the names of their loved ones. Finally, the father’s fingers stop moving along the wall. “Here he is,” he says. This restrained yet moving picture book deals with the lasting impact of the Vietnam War. It’s a good story for Memorial Day, Veterans Day, or any other day when children and grown-ups are thinking about war and its consequences. Recommended for ages 4 to 8.
